SLEEP OUT

Welcome to the Homelessness "Sleep Out"

This experience is only "real-life," it is not real. The purpose of the "Sleep Out" is to allow people to experience what it is like for millions of people around the world who have no home and need to "sleep out" every night. We hope that you find your experience to be educational and consciousness-raising. We hope that you will become part of the solution to raise awareness about homelessness.

Date and time: The Sleep-Out starts at 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 16 and continues through until noon on Saturday, October 18. You can leave at any time, but we hope that you will stay for at least 6-8 hours. If you have classes or work the following day, then please go to them... as you are...This will give you a better understanding of being without the amenities found in a home.

Location: The Sleep-out will take place in the area between the Social Science Building, Pilcher Building, and the campus Public Safety Office.

In order for this event to be safe and successful, there are a few things that we would like for all participants to know. Please read the following information carefully.

Safety: Safety is of the utmost importance to us. Please help us to make sure the event runs smoothly by using your best judgment in all your activities. Below are some important pieces of information and rules.

  1. We will have at least 5 people awake at all times during the night. These people will serve as "night owls" to make sure that nothing out of the ordinary or dangerous is occurring. The "night owls" will be sitting at the tables at Public Safety that served as the check in tables. If you need anything at any time between 12am and 6:30am, you can find them at those tables. KSU police officers are also available at any time by going directly to the Public Safety Office. Officers will patrol the area during the sleep-out, and an officer will be in the sleep-out zone from midnight until 4:00 am Thursday and Friday nights.
  2. Please remember that we are spending the night in close quarters. If you need to venture anywhere during the night, please use caution to not step on anyone or anyone's belongings.
  3. Alcohol, drugs, or other illegal items are not allowed. Anyone found in violation of this rule will be asked to leave and will go through the University Judicial System and possibly the criminal court system.
  4. The doors to the Student Center will be open 24/7 and we can use the restrooms inside the building.

Registration and Processing for the Sleep-Out: Thursday, October 16 from 6pm until 10 pm And Friday, October 17 from 6pm until 10pm

You must turn in your waiver form at the patio/front door area of the KSU Department of Public Safety. You will be processed in the same way that people seeking shelter will be processed: you will be checked for drugs and weapons. You will not be able to get bed space so you must set up your housing space (cardboard boxes will be supplied.)

Sleep-Out
Small group discussions will take place with facilitators and peers during the 42 hour period. You will interact with others who walk by the area.

What can you bring? The weather in October might be cool during the night, so make sure that you are prepared for this experience. Your clothing should be warm and weatherproof. Perhaps you should wear layers of clothing. Food and water will not be provided. You may bring items that will fit into a small backpack. Some of you are taking notes for papers in your classes, so you might want to bring a notebook. No computers. Cell phones can only be kept in your backpack and can only be used in emergencies. Do not bring items that are not necessary (games, etc.). Participants who are unable to part with their electronics will be defined as evidencing addictive or problematic behavior and will be separated from the group and will be subject to an evaluation.

The guidelines are simple: sleep outside, do not shower during this period, and eat only food that is provided to you by others. Learn through your experience.
